When Life Keeps Bowling You Out...Get a Bat and Hit Back!!

The last two weeks have flown by, filled with family commitments and crisis, hopefully life has started to level out and peace will return to the Schutrup's household. Even if it is just for a while!! So bear with me whilst I bring you up to date on Lilly...if you prefer not...then scroll down for today's gift from me to you.

lilly_headshould

The good news is Lilly's scalded foot appears to be slowly getting better, but I was really shocked when I first saw it. I could not believe that water from a tap could inflict such an awful injury, my heart went out to the poor little mite and the pain she must have had to endure. How I wished that it could have been me instead of her, but it turns out that she is much braver than I could ever have been in that situation. It's a warning to us all on how accidents are only a second away and a child moves fast in even a second!!

Having said that she has been so brave and we haven't seen many tears, even when the dressings were being changed. The hardest part for her appears to be seeing the burn. When the dressings are changed her face screws up and she says "Oh no!". When she has her time each day with the dressing off then she sits happily...as long as the area is blocked from her view...so entertainment is required!! It's then that her favourite quilt comes in handy...it works perfectly to block her view. (It was this same quilt that inspired the papers and elements that I have made into a two part download for you all.)

Lilly's also lucky that she has such a down-to-earth mum. Charlotte has been brilliant and even although it cost here dearly, she has smiled as she dealt with Lilly's dressings and taken great pains to distract her as much as possible. That doesn't mean that the panic didn't set in when it first happened!!

Looking back over the last year life has been quite eventful for me...not all good. But I have this stubborn (or stupid?) streak and I refuse to be bowled out. When life throws me or mine hard balls....I get a bat and hit back....even harder!! It may not always be a good thing, but I just hang in there and wait for the chaos to stop. Mind you .....it can take a while, so patience and stamina are need on this one!!!

After all nothing lasts for ever, it doesn't matter if it's good or bad...there is one thing that you can be sure of, everything has a start and an end. My husband says I have the tenacity of a bulldog...I grit my teeth and hold on tight..no matter which way the bronco bucks. That's only because I know eventually it will stop doing it...hopefully before it knocks my teeth out!!!

I use this principle in so many areas of my life..take the dentist....yep you can take mine for one, I am terrified on every visit!!! But before I go in, I tell myself "Hey, it's only 30mins....then it it's over". Saying "It's for my own good" doesn't work for me but a time limit does....I told you I was strange, lol!!

When I had my children I used the same principle. There I was in labour, feeling not so brave...ouch it hurt!! Where was that nurse with the meds? To keep myself calm and hanging in there I firmly told myself "This will only last a few hours...then it stops and think of moment when you can say hello to your own little stranger!!". It worked, but I have to admit that I kept wondering if it would stop soon..I'm really not very brave at all!! Eventually...it did!

Knowing that something has a beginning and an end really helps me hang on when the going gets tough, or if I am just feeling out and out plain scared of a situation!! I might not be sure when the end of it will come, but the comfort is that I know that somewhere down the line what ever it is will stop...hopefully the sooner the better!!

And if all else fails..... grab the bat and keep hitting the balls back with all you've got!! Lol!!

Before I give you the download link for today's gift, I want to say a big thank you to all of you, my friends, who leave comments on my posts, they are very much appreciated.

And finally.......the Lilly's Quilt Papers!! There are 12 in the set, 3 plain papers and 9 patterned with dots, checks and some cute stripes. The elements to match them will be my download on Tuesday..so drop back and collect them too.

jsch_lilquiltpap_folder

If you want to download them you'll find them here.

Have a great day and see you Tuesday!!

How very right and wise you are, June! And, like you, I have found that if I tell myself that this will only last just this much time, it helps me get through. My prayers continue for Lilly...for all of you. And thank you for the papers!

will continue to pray for sweet lilly. she is very brave. tap water can seriously burn--sometimes really badly. just turn down the temperature level and things will be okay

Hello June, so pleased to hear Lilly is getting better and the injury is healing well - she is such a beautiful little girl love to hear of her escapades (safe ones - not the painful type).

I seem to have missed some of your blogs recently and hope also that your Mum has now recovered aswell.

Thank you for the papers, look forward to using them.

Regards, Sue

I'm often amazed at the strength children have and how they deal with pain. I'm so glad she is on the mend, I know it breaks your heart to see your child or Grandchild in pain. I think we would all take that pain if we could. Take care and hope life settles down for you some.

I am so glad to hear that she is doing much better. It is such a terrible and hard thing to go though when a little one we love gets hurts.

I can tell you from my own experience, when I was burned on my inner thigh at 3 years of age, that as young as she is she will most likely forget the actual event.

Mine was a 3rd degree burn and at the time, being that small almost covered my entire inner thigh. I only have one true memory and that is when they 1st took me to the DR.

Everything else I know about this is simply because I heard the story so many times how I got burned.

I know that's much consolation but I do so hope that Lilly too will forget as she gets older.

She sounds very very brave. I feel so bad fro her not being able to look at it. I don't know I may have been the same way.

I am glad to hear from you again and get this update. please know that Lilly and and all of you will be in my prayers!!

Well, as a wise man once said:-

"That which does not destroy us makes us stronger. — Friedrich Nietzsche"

You have to keep batting on, no point in ruining today and tomorrow because of yesterday.

What a brave wee girl!

My friend's son got both his legs badly burnt when he was a toddler by getting into a hot bath and had weeks of dressings and physiotherapy.

The scars are hardly visible now and he's 6' 5" so it obviously didn't do lasting harm.

Keep on keepin on.

(Oh and gorgeous papers btw).

Flippin' Heck June you made me cry. I wish I had your tenacity, and the strength that drives you. I know when push come to shove we all step up to the mark. I hope your marks are fewer and further between for a good long while. I really hope little Lily's burn continues to improve. My little sister, who is also called Lily, was scalded quiet badly when she was 3 years old, and you know, there no sign of the burns, they healed quickly without any scares.

Thank you for the lovely papers, they are so very pretty :D

Love & Hugs to all the family and a huge one for you.

thanks for the papers and for the advice...I hope I can apply it somehow to my situation...that everything has a beginning and ending.
I hope little Lilly continues to improve and hopefully she won't remember what happened.

June, I am so very sorry to read that sweet little Lilly had to endure this and the family, also, but so happy that she is improving.

My son pulled a cup of boiling hot tea off onto his face, arms, and shoulders when he was about 14 months old. Luckily he only ended up with one small scar on his wrist.
I was so devastated at the time as he looked like a mummy in all his bandages. I didn't think he was tall enough to reach it on the counter and it was a hard lesson for Mommy to learn.

I love the photo of Lilly. I have always thought our granddaughter was the prettiest girl I have ever seen (and others tell me the same thing), but your little Miss Lilly just makes me smile every time I see that beautiful face and gorgeous hair. Even if you didn't share freebies, I would love just seeing Lilly's adorable photos.

Love, love the new set of papers. Such pretty colors and patterns. I am anxious to see what elements you designed to go with the papers.
Thanks, as always, for sharing.
Big Hugs!

Hey June.. I do that too... sometimes enduring things for 'your own good' doesn't go down well .. a time frame to get over is much better... Lily is lovely... :)and you are all very brave..

Gosh June what a scare. I bet at the moment it was all going on it was so scarey and chaotic. My youngest son was hit by a car when he was just 3 years and I can only know in my heart what you all must have felt. It's such a scare and most of all, I like you, wished it was me that got hurt. Luckily he's now 23, a grown man. He had his bouts with trouble with the after effects. So, praise the good angel on our sweet children's shoulder in time when things are so bad. I'm glad she's doing well and I can just see her being that little trooper : ) Thanks for the papers. Hugs -- xoxo! (terri - hawaii)

Love the way you think, it's good to remember that everything does have a beginning and and end. Glad to hear that Lilly is healing. My heart goes out to her as she must have so much pain with her tender skin being burnt like that. Thanks for the lovely papers. Surprised you had time to do this with all the turmoil in your life lately. You are appreciated.

Love your fighting spirit! What a scary ordeal you've been through. Can your hot water heater temperature be set lower? Here in the U.S., home builders must set the temp. no higher than 120 or 130 degrees F - precautionary protection for children, elderly, handicapped especially.

Your sweet Lilly will mend thankfully. Many hugs!!!

Lovely papers thank you. Poor little Lilly ! When i was going through a rough patch a few years back the song tubthumping by Chumbawamba was my theme tune, the main line being "I get knocked down, I get back up again, you're never going to keep me down!"

Oh I am so sorry to hear of Lily's burn!! I accidentally burned my foot with boiling water when I was 9 months pregnant, 23 years ago. When you are an adult you can cope, but these poor little nippers cannot understand why they are hurting!!

I have the exact same perspective as you on pain, just like you say in childbirth. When you know it will end, you can bear almost anything. :)

I am enjoying your blog!

Cheers,
Marie

Hey June,
So sorry to hear about poor little Lilly. In Australia we have a "recommendation" that parents turn their tap water temperature down to 50degrees celcious to stop the burn from being too scalding. After reading your posts, I'm gonna make sure mine's turned down for sure! Take care,
Katharyn.

June, wow, I'm not even sure where to start.

First, the little ones always take things in stride. They can teach us big people so much. I'm so sorry for sweet Lilly's boo-boo, but sounds like she's taking it in stride. It's just a hiccup that will soon be gone.

Second, I too have had a really rough year. I left and abuser and was homeless. I wish I would have found my bat sooner, but that doesn't matter, I've found it now.

You have such a wonderful voice when sharing with us, keep up the great work.

Jen
