Insomniacs Unit!!

Before I get to the freebie...yes I know you all want one!! But first...my little problem. Was that a groan I heard? Who said not an other one? Honestly, it's not a bad problem...just a teeny, weeny one...that is DRIVING me MAD!!!

Today I feel like I need two matchsticks to prop open my eyelids...yep, I need some sleep!! The only problem is that recently...well, for quite a while really.....I can't get to sleep and to add insult to injury....when I do manage it, I can't stay asleep for any length of time either.

Result, one tired lady. I feel sleepy until I lie down and then suddenly...I'm wide awake. I've tried everything, hot drinks, warm baths, soft music, reading, not eating after 8.00pm, counting sheep...OK, so you get the message!! It is murder...or could lead to it, lol!!

I think part of it stems from my lack of "me" time during the day...no space to think personal thoughts and so at night my eager brain starts catching up and crams in all the things it didn't have time for in the day.

I decided to checked some herbal remedies for sleeplessness and some old Victorian ones. Some of them were sensible but some were scary, some just made me laugh and some really surprised me. I thought that drug problems were a modern thing and perhaps they are, but drug usage was rife in Victorian times...really it was!!

Even Queen Victoria took cannabis for insomnia...prescribed by her own personal physician no less. Lots more people took laudanum, an opium based drug, all highly illegal now. If you were poor gin seems to have been the favourite. But I think that I will give these a miss, sounds like the cure could cause more problems than the problem!!!

An other nasty thing about insomnia is the tossing and turning. Last night I ended up like a grub in a cocoon. I twisted so much that the duvet was wrapped around my legs..it made getting out of bed in the dark pretty risky I can tell you!! I felt like a grounded mermaid!!

One of the "sensible" sounding cures involved "emptying your mind".....sort of like putting out the garbage each night before you go to bed, I suppose. The only problem is my mind refuses point blank to be emptied!!! I empty it and it just fills itself up, perhaps I need a tap to shut it off?

I suppose I could try the insomnia cure that appeared in the Glasgow Herald in Victorian times. This one involved taking old fashioned yellow soap, and rubbing it into the roots of your hair until your head was lathered all over. Then you tied up your head in a napkin (what was that all about?), went to bed and washed out the soap in the morning. ...oh yes and you had to drink tea before this. That soap sounds yucky!! Definitely an other to pass on!!!

On some advice I tried the trick of getting up again and not returning to bed until you feel really tired..but I just end up feeling like a human yoyo!!! In bed, out of bed...feel exhausted..in bed....wide awake, out of bed..and so on!! That could go on for ever until I got too weak to get in or out of bed and ended up a heap on the floor!!

I found one that said to tie a wet hankie or rag around your wrist... this sounds a bit like a recipe for a damp night to me, so that one was consigned to the bin too!!

So any good insomnia remedies...that don't involve heavy sedation, electric shock treatments or nasty ingredients...are warmly welcomed!!!

For now...I am still tired and I have acquired more trivia to fill my energetic brain with!!

Today I have a little freebie I made a while ago but never got around to using. So, I thought I would share it. You can use this one for personal or commercial use. I hope you like the two scrolls. Download them and pop them on your page and add a drop shadow to bring them to life.

jsch_fantasyscrolls_folder

You can download them here

Have a great day and if your lucky a wonderful nights sleep!!!

hi, been too busy to scrap, making liquid soap, ADICTIVE! I think I have enough for a 3rd world country!
Anyway, several hers are good for that. Valerian works well for me Melatonin but it tends to make me sleepy in the daytime if I use too often. Also I've been trying an herb pillow I made, seems to work! I used chamomile & several other essential oils that help too. Just some more ideas to try!

Sleep deprivation, yuck! I have been nursing for about 21 years and the only remedy that works consistently? Listen to your body. No matter what you are doing if you feel you can sleep, lie down. Ignore clocks and schedules (great time to start now, weekend:) and just lie down. You have upset your internal clock, we all have one, and now your body is trying to reset itself, but our brains try to over-ride. If you don't settle your mind to it, your body's next line of defense, attack the immune system. So, having said that, wish you luck and sweet dreams:)

Well - I am a member of the insomniacs anonymous local chapter, lol! And it is usually because I cannot "turn off" my brain. Once I lay down, there is suddenly no distractions from what has been on my mind - and there it goes. One thing that does help sometimes - and won't hurt to try - is to get comfortable and in the dark (I have to have a fan on high speed for the background noise, lol!) concentrate on one part of your body, starting with the toes on one foot, separately, then the ankle, then the whole foot, the calf, the knee, etc., eventually going to the other leg and then on up your body. Feel your toe, and will your mind to relax the toe, only when it is fully relaxed do you move to the next toe or next part. I don't think I am explaining it very well, but it relaxes both your body and your mind and often enables me to fall asleep. Doesn't always work, but almost always at least calms me down so I am not so stressed. Yep - stress is the real culprit here.

Good luck - and thanks for the gorgeous scrolls!

Thank you for the scrolls, will be following this post as I have been an insomniac for most of my life and have tried the background noise, aromatherapy, self hypnosis, relaxation techniques, sleeping pills (which I hate hate hate and refuse to use now). Have counted sheep, read boring books, etc. This does mess with my immune system and I have a hard time fighting whatever is going around. Good luck to you and if you find the secret please share with the rest of us insomniacs, lol.

thanks so much I have sleep issues also and I agree that if your body says sleep try to get some right then--actually easier said than to do in real life

Hi June, so sorry to read the sleep problem on your blog today! I have spells like this too and there is not a lot I can do only put up with them and know that eventually they will ease off and I will get some sleep..I only have about 5 hours a day now if that but I refuse to take pills, I have seen too much of that.
I try to empty my mind too but I get into thinkng "what if I forget this or that" I try to imagine all black and I am floating, only to think about what black means to me and am back at square one..Do you ever have restless legs? my hubby laughed at me but some nights I just can't keep them still and have actually fell out of bed I have tossed and turned so much :( luckily now I sleep alone, since I had an accident as hubby is such a good sleeper we would come to blows..lol..
Thanks so much for the lovely gift, and if yo uever find a cure or anything to help let me know too :)

First, thanks for all your gifts that you share. As for not sleeping, I have fibromyalgia and often have trouble sleeping. I always have a fan on high for noise, keep the bedroom cool, and take the occasional Benedryl. It is much better now that we have the internet and hundreds of TV channels to cater to the nightowls. Many years ago, with insomnia, I felt like I was the ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD who wasn't sleeping, and that would make me more anxious about not sleeping! (Starts a viscious cycle!) I am also a nurse, and I can tell you that for your immune system, you need to lie down and rest w/eyes closed, even if you can't sleep. If you find it is really driving you crazy and interfering w/your life, better to go to the MD and ask for a short-term low dose anti-anxiety rx, like xanax, rather than start on sleeping pills. This may help the mind to slow down in addition to helping you sleep. Good luck and know that you are not alone. Amy

First I want to thank you for your fabulous scrollwork! Absolutely gorgeous! My New Year Resolution was to go thru ALL of my old "favs" scrap links that I haven't visited recently and say Happy New Year and thank you for any and all previous "snags". So thank you and Happy 2009!

OMG, insomnia!!!! Sleeplessness and I have been buddies for over 20 years now. I've tried sleeping pills, going to bed early to give my mind time to get tired, self-hypnosis (which worked for awhile but no longer does), herbal remedies, etc, etc. Though I have to say, some your Victorian remedies sound hilarious and NOT to be used, LOL. Now when I go to bed, I allow myself 10 minutes to "think". After that I force myself to sing a song in my head... predetermined of course... over and over and over. (I guess it could be a poem or even the Preamble even, haha). It helps with the "thinking" part, for me anyway. But if you try this, be warned... you can really end up with strange dreams depending on what you use. Good luck with your insomnia!

The scrolls are beautiful, thank you. I feel so sorry for you and your lack of being able to sleep, that has to be the most horrible feeling. I hope there is a solution somewhere soon.

Sorry you are having sleep problems. I think it is one of those things women have to deal with especially later in life. I know many women with the problem including myself. I read before going to sleep and just read that if you are on the computer or watching TV before bed it can stimulate your brain. I don't know I have fallen asleep watching TV! LOL! Also if you use lavender on your bedding or in the air, it helps you sleep. You can find sprays or even liquids or oils to add to your laundry or bath which help. You might check with your doctor too. You might have some physical problem. Hope you find a way to help with the problem and if so share. Thanks for the beautiful goodies! :)

Hi June!
Gorgeous scrolls, thanks so much for the comm use.
I am so excited - I started my First Ever Blog! It is not "dressed for company" yet but when it is I would love to send you a link. I've used one of your goodies in my header :)
Re insomnia, try Passiflora if Valerian doesn't work but my best advice?...Treat yourself to an Aromatherapy massage at a time when you can go to bed when you get home. Drink lots of water after the massage - it is very cleansing and lots of toxins will need to be flushed out.

I too suffer with insomnia June, and have tried just about everything that I've ever heard of. I tend to fall asleep when I start watching TV, but if someone turns it off, watch out because I'm wide awake again. My DH thinks that I worry to much and I should just shut my mind off at night, but I can't do that. I think it is a woman's thing LOL. Seriously I do hope that you find an answer that works for you, and I'd love to hear it if it does ;)

Thanks for the lovely scrolls

Love them thankyou same problem here find i get tired around tea time then when its time to get some sleep i'm wide awake i agree with you on there's not enough hours in the day dunno where the times going hope you find a solution soon

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the scrolls.
Interesting that no one suggested addressing the issues that your mind is keeping you up trying to solve. Disciplening the mind with meditation and breathing works wonders. Meditation teaches you that you needn't handle everything yourself. Your family and others can manage on their own and indeed have their own ideas about solving things.
When you're ready to sleep and your mind is yaking try telling it that you can't do anything about it right now but you will take care of it in the morning. My mind always says yes to this bargain and off to sleep I go.
Or deep breathing. Take ten slooooooooow deep breaths while counting to ten. (one for each breath). I wake up in the morning realizing I never made it to the tenth breath.
Do take time to take of yourself during the day

Anonymous said...

Hi June,
Love the scrolls, thank you so much.
As for the sleeplessness, can't say I have a magic cure, wish I had; however, what usually works for me when the brain is in overdrive at night is to write everything down. Sometimes it's pictures of a creative idea, shopping to do, dates to remember. I think that the reason we lay awake for so long is that we afraid that by morning we will have forgotten things that seemed so important in the middle of the night. Good luck

LOVELY!! I love those little scroll/swirly things! Really makes a page I think! I will probably be using it lots so continue to keep an eye out! lol

I am sooooo sorry you are not sleeping well. And that your mum is still giving you fits! :-) Hope you find SOME peace and quiet and sleep soon! I have a SIL who started taking Melatonin to sleep, maybe that could help you. Worth a try. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

I too have no cure for sleeplessness. At vatious times I suffer with it, but usually get up and turn on the computer. During the day when I'm on the comp I have no trouble falling asleep in front of it, but at night.....that's a different story. Not one to take pills, but do have lavender oil gently wafting in the bedroom.

Cindyrelly said...

Hi June, I've heard about Melatonin too but haven't done much research on it... I tend to take the over-the-counter's like Exedrine or Tylenol PM... they barely have an effect on me but knock my hubby right out so results obviously vary ;) Thanks for the feedback and comment you left me. I will try and catch-up with you soon as I am off to pack for my Nana's funeral... My Mom is coming unglued so she needs me. Take Care, Cindy

Kessa said...

Hehe - sorry June - I'm not really laughing at you but I am so pleased that your writing and wonderful sense of humour haven't been affected by sleep deprivation. I only manage a few hours of sleep a night if I am lucky and have been known to nod off at my computer (regularly). Must get a mouse with a wire so it stops falling on the floor when I nod off - LoL).

Thank you for thes lovely embellishments - I love scrolls.

Thank you so much for the scrolls. Your insomnia may not be a laughing matter, but your writing about it keeps me giggling. In fact I enjoy reading all of your posts. I just don't express my appreciation very often - both for the writing and the wonderful freebies.

Hi, and thanks for the gorgeous scrolls.

Good luck overcoming sleep deprivation! Hope something here helps. One thing I do that works is to repeat "one" (in place of actually *thinking* of something or counting, which requires mental involvement). One... one... one... It really doesn't lead to anything of interest or outcome, so it can work to bore me to sleep. For me, if it hasn't worked after half an hour, I give up for the night and get back up. I also sleep better during the day (that preference collides with reality, of course). Good luck.

Thanks for the beautiful scrolls. When I can sleep, sometimes it helps me to listen to the following CD- I can focus on it and not the million other thoughts in my head. Sleep Easy: Guided Meditation for Deep Rest by Mary Maddux and Richard Maddux. I've listened to it so much that sometimes I just recite the script in my head which can work as well. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the scrolls sweetie, I love them!!! OMG it sounds like you have descried my sleepless nights to a tee. I have found that running a fan or one of those air purifier machines for background noise helps some, but my doctor also prescribed low dose xanax which really helps but if I don't want to take those I will take two Excedrin PM, they seem to work better for me than Tylenol PM. On occasion when hubby needs one, he only takes one pill and that knocks him out for a good nights rest without any morning after effects. Hope you find something that helps you, I know you get exhausted after awhile of this cycle.

hi June thanks so much for the gorgeous scrolls. sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with you sleep. i too have been having troubles for the past three or four years. what i tried in the past for sleep was to take a hot shower, drink a cup of hot chamomile tea and lay down. you have to "Make" yourself clear your mind and "Only" think of relaxations. I know this sounds silly but it really works if you can make yourself do it. Start with your toes and concentrate on nothing but relaxing your toes. When they are totally relaxed then just concentrate on the ball and middle of your foot relaxing them. When they are relaxed concentrate on relaxing the heels, then the ankles, then the calves and work yourself all the way up to your face and your head. Yeah, I told you it sounds silly but if you can make yourself clear your mind and just concentrate on your relaxation it will work. Hope this helps!!! And thanks again, the scrolls are wonderful!

p.s. and you really need some me time so you should try to get at least 20 minutes of me time a day. take care and God bless

Deborah Claxton said...

i read the comment about the fish tank and that's sounds like an excellent idea, with the light cut off of course. i just remembered also that i had a friend that use to spray lavendar spray from bath and body all over her pillow, sheets and covers at night because it is for relaxation.

I hate to dampen your mood even more, but I suffer from insomnia on a contant basis and because I suffer from severe chronic pain, it's even worse. And the thing is, it's not like I can really get into doing anything at 2-4-5 am. You can't get up and start a project because then you will definitely not go to sleep. I've tried all types of things too. But, I'm also on some strong meds for pain. Needless to say, I've gone days at a time with less than 2-3 hours sleep. Once, I was up for 56 hours straight. So, I can't help you with any fix it's on sleep methods. But, I can symphathize with you. Good luck on finding a solution that works.

Thanks for the awesome freebies. I love doodles and swirls, collect them actually. Hugs -- xoxo!! (terri - hawaii)

One thing I can add to your try list, and I know this does help me. Turn your alarm clock so you cannot see it from the bed. Then you can't keep looking at it to see how much later you have managed to stay awake. Out of site, out of mind? Maybe. But you will stop 'checking' the time if you know you can't see it.

Or, you can give in and keep strange hours like some of the rest of us. At least now you have a choice. Good luck, June!

First of all - thank you so much for the scrolls... they so pretty!

I feel for your issue of isomnia...the only advice I can offer you came from my Grandma, who didn't wrap her soapy head in a towel and she lived to be 98....anyway, Gram told me that you have to have at least one hour of very vigorous exercise of some sort or another during the afternoon number one...and then she always went to bed about a half hour before she wanted to go to sleep. She took a glass of red wine every night, and while she drank the wine (oh, at room temp by the way)...she wrote down all the "stuff" she was thinking about during that half hour.

I'm over sixty, and it's worked for me my entire adult life (although I must admit sometimes I skip the exercise and drink two glasses of wine) LOL..

Good luck Cen!

Thank you so much for your beautiful flourishes. So sorry you have insommnia, best look after it before it gets to bad, you need to kick start your body into sleeping again. Sometimes Gravol or dramamine helps you just enough to fall asleep. I speak from expierence. Of course not taken on a regular basis.

Unknown said...

Thanks for the pretty scrolls, or as I call them "flourishes". I also suffer from time to time from insomnia and it sucks! A friend of mine hooked me up with a natural sleep remedy; melatonin pills. The body makes melatonin as it sleeps to keep you asleep so maybe your body is not making enough to keep you asleep normally. You can find the pills in the vitamin and natural pill section of most stores or try a natural store. One word of caution; try cutting the tablet in half for the first couple of nights or even weeks as they will put you out and you'll feel a little groggy in the morning with the whole pill.

Thanks June, for the pretty scrolls!! It seems you've got plenty of advice here, don't think I have anything to add. Although, what's a little damp spot if a well-wrung washcloth helps you sleep?!

When I was preggers I used a relaxation technique similar to fl_connie - only I started at the head and with every breath in, you tense those muscles up, as you exhale you relax that part of your body. So, forehead, cheeks/mouth, jaw, neck, shoulders, left arm, each hand, etc. all the way to your toes. Repeat until you're out. It was in doing this that I realized what i feels like to be truly relaxed, your body sinking into whatevery you're laying on. Oh, lay on your back, nothing touching (ie don't cross your ankles - try to start that way anyhow). GOOD LUCK!!

Hugs, Angel

Hi, thanks so much for the scrolls, they are so pretty...I too have had problems such as yours and have now started taking melatonin every night. It does seem to be helping. It isn't habit forming and is something our bodies produce when we are younger and then as our bodies age drops off! So I hope and pray you find some relief soon. The other thing is that when I have slept awhile and then wake and know I am not going to sleep again for awhile I don't fight it. I just quietly get up and do quiet things so I don't wake my husband. I used to try and go back to sleep but found this didn't work until about an hour after I had awoke. Now I can tell from my body signs that I am ready to go back to bed. Ah mid-life!! God gives grace!

My brain switches to top gear around 10.30pm. I get off the computer by then and settle down for late night TV. Valerian is a help plus light reading before turning off the light. A small fan running is my "white noise" solution ... Zzzzzzzzzzzzz ... after years of insomnia, FMS,worry, every sleeper med and not going with the flow this way works beautifully for me.
Being a no caffeine, non smoker or drinker helps too ... what most 'experts' say is right ... Good luck, Sleep well. xo

Insomnia - try bananas. The have the same tryptiphan that your thanksgiving turkey dinner has. Also, Celestial Seasonings makes "sleepy time" tea - it has a bear in a night shirt & sleep cap on the box. Someone recommended it to me years ago for the same reason. BOTH help.
Also, if you took lamaz classes & know how to force yourself to focus on your breathing - slowly in through your nose & out through your mouth. That helps also.
Last but not least, if you pray - just start talking to God about everything & everyone you are thinking about all day. Asking him to help. Don't think about it more than you need to - just talk to him "in general" (he already knows the problems!). That I find knocks me out - right in the middle of the conversation. LOL I hope God has a sense of humor or He is mad as heck at me for always nodding off in the middle of our chats. LOL

Thank you! Same sleep problem, hence nightowl type activity. I chalk it up to menopause. You can have a doctor check you with a sleep study, proper REM cycles result in normal sleep. Sometimes a mild medication is required to help. When you have time, please direct me back to your excellent tutorial of last year making a round frame (blue with white dots and a flower) using Photoshop Elements. It was wonderful and I need to use it again. Didn't you used to have a link on your blog to access your tutorials? I can scroll backwards one by one, but it will take me forever to find it. I'll print it out this time and save. Thanks!!

Insomnia is absolutely awful. I have suffered from it for years. I have a very active 4 year old, so not sleeping and then chasing her around all day can take it's toll at times. After trying several different methods to no avail, sometimes I take an over the counter product and at least enables me to sleep for a little bit, but it's still that initial 'falling asleep' that is the problem.
I totally feel for you, last night I didn't doze off until 4am and had to get up at 6am. I am so tired right now, but I know that once I hit the bed I will be wide awake.
The world is a very quite place when everyone in it is sleeping but you.
From one insom to another - I wish you sweet, peaceful and a good nights sleep.

Beautiful freebie. I too am an insomniac. My advice - although its hit and mis with me is... a lavendar bath. Then wrap up warm and go to bed in a silent, dark room. The combination of the lavendar and the warmth makes you sleepy. Like I said its hit and miss with me.. but works alot of the time.. my BF is instructed to unwrap my blankets once i goover otherwise i get toooo hot. Also have you tried rearrange your bedroom? Sometimes moving your bed can help .. to do with electric currents from powerlines etc

Hi

I am sure you may have received this suggestion or even tried it but I have to send in my two cents worth since it helps me everyday.

Emptying the mind requires discipline of the mind and body. Practice of yoga and meditation helps achieve that state of bliss where you are able to tune out your surroundings both physical and emotional. I practice Kundalini Yoga which combines yoga and meditation, sublimely blending them into one. It is not a hectic form of yoga (that’s Hatha yoga) This form of yoga relies of controlling your breathing and increasing the flexibility of your body. It also helps improve your focus. You can literally transport yourself to the center of the universe by concentrating your Kundalini energy on your forehead, between your two eyebrows. And unlike popular belief, you can perform this yoga in any posture, on your carpet, couch, or even on your bed. If you need more details I will be happy to help you.

Hope this helps.
Thanks Sella
